THE REGENT'S CANAL IN ISLINGTON

A free exhibition - Barge Fiodra - Angel - Sept 1st 2019

Barge Fiodra September 1st 2019

People in Islington will have the pleasure of seeing a free exhibition on the history of the Regent’s Canal in Islington. This is the culmination of the Regent’s Canal Heritage Project spearheaded by the Young Actors Theatre of Islington (YATI) supported by the National Lottery Heritage fund. A free 40 page booklet accompanies the exhibition.

The display will feature: now and then photos; stories and memories from twenty people about working and living by the canal; historical accounts; maps showing what was where; a look at the industries which thrived on the canal banks with a focus on timber, ice and marble. Zines will be on show produced by young people during canal photography workshops in the spring.

This work is part of the celebrations which will culminate in 2020 on the 200th anniversary of the completion of the canal. In the summer of 2020, the exhibition will be shown at the Islington Museum and on Barge Fiodra as part of the Angel Canal Festival.

Jamie Lynch of YATI says “Community Theatre is such a great tool for celebrating where we live and who we live with; we are so grateful to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for supporting us. We have brought local elders to share their stories of Islington’s past with some of its newest residents and collected lots of memories and photos over the few months. We have all learnt such a lot and we're delighted to share these at the exhibition and in the booklet."
